ALAN’S DIARY
MY SECRET PROJECT
Well, it’s not really a secret since I reveal it extensively in the book. But, yeah, nobody really knew about it for several years because it is a private and personal type of thing for me.
The restoration took two years to complete, and I’m proud to say, I did it entirely by myself. The process of design, taking all the old and damaged stuff apart, redesigning and getting the foundation, structure, the interior and everything all the way up to getting the roof completed gave me a lot of experience and the lessons learned were priceless.
Restoring an old, tired house is one of my passions. It’s also my excuse to get away from the city whenever I have the chance. Working with my hands brings a lot of joy and satisfaction—after spending hours exhausting my brain in my profession. For instance, debating, negotiating and more debating, all to win a point of view and achieve the commensurate stakes takes a toll on me. Working on something non-job related is refreshing and I welcome every minute of it. At least I’m in control of my stress: I’m wagging my tail, not the tail wagging me!
Since this house restoration project is in Maine, the change in scenery from city to countryside and seacoast helps me respect nature even more. The gentle waves coming to the shore, the fresh salty air blowing gently on my face, the seagulls flying behind the fishing and lobster boats—hoping to get fish—it’s all quite amazing.
Recently, I helped my young nephew build a simple birdhouse. It was a fun project and I loved every minute of it. One thing I realized—other than finishing a nice birdhouse—is the bond between me and Tyler grew stronger. Using our hands together for the purpose of reaching a common goal is important and I value any opportunity I can to do so with my loved ones.
